Add The California Post on Google Suni Lee is officially giving herself another chance to reach the Olympic stage.
The six-time Olympic medalist announced Tuesday that she has returned to gymnastics training, launching a possible bid to compete at the 2028 Los Angeles Games. Lee revealed the news in an Instagram video released exactly two years before the opening ceremony in Southern California.
“I know what I’m capable of,” Lee said. “I’m willing to do whatever it takes to get there.”
The video ended with a simple message: “This is more than a comeback.”
Lee, who turned 23 in March, has not competed since the 2024 Paris Olympics, where she helped the United States win the team gold medal while earning individual bronze medals in the all-around and uneven bars. Those results brought her career total to six Olympic medals across two Games.
Her return is especially notable because even reaching Paris once appeared unlikely.
Lee stepped away from college gymnastics at Auburn in 2023 after being diagnosed with a kidney condition. Her preparation for Paris included months of treatment, medication changes and uncertainty over whether she would be healthy enough to train at an elite level.
She eventually received medical clearance and joined Simone Biles, Jordan Chiles, Jade Carey and Hezly Rivera on the gold-medal-winning American team.
Now Lee wants to find out whether another Olympic run is possible.
“I know there’s more in me,” she told The Hollywood Reporter. “I’m giving myself one more chance to find out what happens when I keep going.”
Her comeback will also be documented in a film project from Fanatics Studios, offering a behind-the-scenes look at her attempt to reach a third Olympics.
Lee joins Carey among the members of the 2024 team who have returned to elite competition. Biles has described her chances of competing in Los Angeles as uncertain, while Chiles has not ruled out making a run of her own.
The 2028 gymnastics competition begins July 15 in Los Angeles, giving Lee two years to rebuild her routines, test her health and earn another place on Team USA.
She has already completed one improbable comeback.
Now she is chasing another — this time on home soil.
