‘Blood moon’ set to rise over Hong Kong but clouds, rain may get in the way

Forecaster says cloudy skies and possible rain could keep the city from witnessing the rare lunar eclipse on Tuesday evening

The Hong Kong Observatory also said temperatures were expected to drop gradually from 20 degrees Celsius (68 Fahrenheit) at noon on Tuesday to around 16 degrees in the evening.

The astronomical event will begin even before the moon rises above the horizon, according to the Observatory. By the time it appears at 6.22pm, it will already be partly immersed in Earth’s darkest shadow.

“Although the total lunar eclipse will start at 7.04pm and last until 8.03pm, there will be a lot of cloud cover tonight and a chance of rain,” scientific officer Gabriel Fan Man-hei said.

“So whether people can see it depends on the actual cloud cover and how the rain develops tonight,” he said.
