Is Saatva worth the hype? We slept on its luxury mattresses and bed frames to decide

Miska Salemann/Elana Fishman Confession: For the majority of my adult life thus far, I’ve only slept on used mattresses.

After graduating from college — where I slumbered (and studied, and binge-watched Netflix DVDs back when that was a thing) on NYU’s twin XL beds of dubious provenance — I moved into my first real apartment with a roommate and upgraded to a full-size mattress I found on Craigslist.

This was, to be clear, before the Great NYC Bedbug Scare of 2010. Still, looking back, I realize it probably wasn’t the best idea to buy a pre-owned bed from a complete stranger, nor for my sister and I to ride in the back of the unmarked white truck my “man with a van” (also found via Craiglist, of course) used to transport the bed to its new home.

That secondhand mattress served me well for the following decade and a half. But recently, my husband, who’d gamely been sharing it with me for most of that period, gently suggested we consider investing in a queen bed long enough for our taller-than-average selves to stretch out without our toes winding up pressed against the footboard.

And so began my research. The polar opposite of an impulse shopper, I like to exhaustively cross-compare reviews across multiple websites before pulling the trigger on any big-ticket purchase, so you’d better believe I was going to put in the work for something I’d spend at least eight hours per day using for at least the next decade.

And the more I read, the more I kept noticing the rave reviews for the Saatva Classic, which has topped multiple roundups of the best mattresses on the market across the internet.

The crown jewel and most popular of Saatva’s offerings, this luxury innerspring mattress is available in sizes ranging from twin to California king. It also comes in two heights and three different comfort levels: Plush Soft (ideal for side sleepers and those into super-soft beds), Luxury Firm (the most popular pick), and Firm (great for stomach and back sleepers, or others in need of an extra-firm mattress). If you’re in the market for a king or California king, there’s also the option to split your mattress between two different firmnesses.

The Saatva Classic combines two layers of supportive yet bouncy steel coils with a pressure-relieving memory foam layer; it’s topped off with a plush 3-inch pillow top for cushioned comfort.

Unlike bed-in-a-box mattresses, it’s made to order and comes with free white glove delivery. The Saatva Classic’s also backed by a 365-day home trial period — so you can test it out for a whole year, and either return or exchange it for a $99 fee if you’re not entirely satisfied — along with a lifetime warranty.

Height Options: 11.5 inches, 14.5 inches | Sizes: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, Split King, Cal King, Split Cal King | Comfort level: Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, Firm | More features: Option to add an adjustable base, platform bedframe, mattress foundation or box spring

From the get-go, I knew choosing the right firmness level for our new mattress would be challenging.

I prefer a more pillowy, hotel-style sleep experience, while my husband swears he can’t sleep on anything but the firmest of mattresses. Since I didn’t want to blindly order a bed either of us might not end up loving, we decided to try out all the options in person at Saatva’s Flatiron store in NYC and struck a surprisingly easy compromise on the Luxury Firm. It makes perfect sense that it’s the most popular of the three comfort levels; it seemed cushy and cloudlike enough for my needs, yet sturdy and supportive enough for his.

Every Saatva mattress is made to order, so production on ours took a little over a week from start to finish, and then we arranged delivery for about two weeks later. The process was effortless, with Saatva’s team installing our new mattress and hauling away our old one in minutes.

While it took a minute to get used to the height of our Saatva (we opted for the 14.5-inch model), it turns out it’s actually more comfortable for two tall people to get in and out of bed when it’s a bit higher off the floor. Who knew?!

The height took a minute to get used to, but we love it now. Elana Fishman More importantly, after years of using our old mattress, sleeping on our Saatva is quite literally a night and day difference. Not only does it fit both of us and our cat with room to spare both width- and length-wise, but it truly feels like slumbering atop a cloud.

And while I’d long assumed waking up with mystery aches and pains was just part of being in one’s late 30s, I haven’t hopped out of bed with a sore neck or achy back in the months since receiving my mattress.

My husband didn’t love the divots in the plush pillow top, but they didn’t bother me one bit. Elana Fishman While I detected no issues with our Saatva from the start, my husband didn’t love the divots in the plush pillow top, so he ordered an inexpensive mattress pad on Amazon to pop on top. This fixed the issue for him, and I didn’t feel much of a difference one way or the other.

If you’re in the market for a new mattress, I’d wholeheartedly recommend the Saatva Classic. With a full range of size options and three different firmness levels from which to choose, you’re sure to find one that suits your sleep style — even if you and your partner differ on that front, as my husband and I do. Like any luxury mattress, it’s an investment, but the high quality and customer service justify the expense. I’ve always been someone who aggressively loves sleep, but thanks to my Saatva, bedtime now truly feels like a treat.

My husband, my cat and I have all been sleeping on our Saatva Classic for a full year now, and love it every bit as much as we did the first night. Despite the pillowy top, we’ve experienced no issues with body indentations or unevenness — just a great night’s sleep every time. The real indicator that our mattress is top-tier? Every time we return from a vacation, we agree that it’s comfier than any hotel bed.

Crucially, our cat, Liz Lemon, also approves of our new mattress; after all, she logs many more hours on it each day than either of us do! Elana Fishman How we tested our mattress I’ve spent the past four months sleeping on the Saatva Classic, keeping the following criteria top of mind to ensure a truly comprehensive review:

Given Saatva’s growing popularity in the bedding and furniture sphere, we’ve elected to revisit this review and expand on some of the store’s other bedroom offerings. Commerce Reporter Miska Salemann tested and reviewed two popular bed frames, the Minori Storage Bed and the newly-released Milan Bed.

The Saatva lure is nothing new to me. I’ve seen the brand’s plush beds and stylish bedroom furniture pop up on my #ForYouPage more than once, and after hearing how much my coworker loved her Saatva mattress, I decided it was time to see how the bed frames also held up. I browsed the brand’s extensive catalog before landing on the minimalistic Minori Storage Bed and stylish Milan Bed.

Equally attractive, I like that Saatva offers free assembly and in-room delivery. I was in the nightmarish process of moving, and Saatva made the process so simple that I didn’t have to lift a finger. My bed frames were delivered by a talented three-person team that constructed both frames in under an hour and left no dust behind. They carefully curved around tight corners, leaving all walls unscathed, and even placed the beds exactly where we wanted them. I’m someone who has spent eight hours building a single chair from Amazon, so this was a walk in the park in comparison.

Like many, I also fear the commitment that comes with choosing a product that you spend a lot of time using (I mean, just around half your life, right?). But, Saatva frames also come with a lifetime warranty and a 365-night home trial to ensure satisfaction and ease any attachment anxiety. So, if you don’t like it, it’s not the end of the world.

Understated elegance is the easy way to describe the Minori Bed by Sattava, but this classic upholstered frame is much more than a pretty face. The low-profile, minimalistic design and softly curved headboard certainly add some shape and style, but it’s what’s underneath that counts, and that is ample storage space.

Without a doubt, my favorite element of this frame’s design is the built-in, spacious drawer system, which offers plenty of room to store seasonal clothing, bedding, or all the other junk that’s better out of sight. The drawer lifts vertically with a gentle pull and push motion — not a heavy lift, per se, but it does take a bit of force to slide open. As an apartment-dweller, I’ve accepted that closet space is overwhelmingly underwhelming, and the Minori Bed is the effective space-saver that I needed all along.

My previous frame was a wobbly metal piece I bought off Facebook, and as you can probably imagine, a little rocking and rolling was commonplace. The Minori has me forgetting that feeling altogether; the solid platform keeps my mattress perfectly balanced, and a tall upholstered backboard gently cradles pillows, so there’s no slipping or sliding. I feel like I’m sleeping in a cocoon.

On the point of sleeping on the Minori, l feel more grounded, my spine feels aligned, and the low-profile design makes it so easy to crawl in and out of bed that I actually look forward to getting up in the morning. Natural linen upholstery complements my space, without stealing too much attention from other furniture. While it’s not cheap, it’s an investment and one I would certainly recommend making if you take your sleep seriously and appreciate good looks.

Released in celebration of Milan’s 2025 Fashion Week, the fashion-forward Milan bed frame flaunts all that we love about classic couture, fusing wood and linen for an alluring look that becomes the centerpiece of a room. No detail was forgotten in the design. Its freestanding, fully upholstered headboard contrasts with the oak wood finish, and the luxurious look is not the only selling point.

Milan’s beauty is built to last. Reinforced steel brackets, premium finished plywood slats, and multiple center support feet ensure longevity — so you can enjoy years of supportive sleep without worrying about warping. Of course, with the included lifetime warranty, there’s not much to stress about anyway. But it never hurts to know that this frame is a quality piece of furniture.

Milan Bed Frame, reviewed by Miska Salemann. Miska Salemann I only have one small bone to pick, and it’s probably something that I could have avoided if I had taken better measurements. At 5.5 inches, Milan’s upholstered footboard is a bit thicker than I would have liked for my small room. Every inch counts in there, but I’m so impressed with the construction that I don’t mind the size. Not to mention, with the soft fabric and rounded corners, my toddler can crawl all over it without being poked or prodded.

Much in line with its name, the Milan has the look and feel of a charming, luxury escape, and at $2,095, it probably will cost just as much — but it allows you to enjoy that blissful state of calm for far longer than a week-long holiday abroad.

As a shopping writer with a special focus on health and wellness, I’m constantly on the lookout for products that support consumers’ overall mood and physical health. I wholeheartedly believe that Saatva’s bed frames achieve both; carefully constructed with eco-friendly materials, designed for safe and restful sleep, and feng-sui-friendly, so you feel at peace as soon as you sink into bed after a long day. I’m not saying this bedding brand is going to change your life, but it might change how you feel at the end of the night. That alone is enough to sell me on the thousand-dollar price tags. As far as my personal bedding preferences go, Saatva reigns supreme.

A quality bed frame is an integral piece of furniture in a sleep space. While testing and reviewing two popular styles from Saatva, I kept in mind a few key factors: the quality of the material, stability/support level, and the overall design and aesthetics.
