“For reasons under investigation, the situation escalated, resulting in two National Guard soldiers firing upon Johnson, striking and killing him,” the Bureau said.
Memphis police previously claimed Johnson turned toward the soldiers, gun in hand, before they opened fire, WREG reported, although that was not included in the Bureau statement.
