The Great Church Choir , together with the church musicians , forms the backbone of the musical activities in the Great Church , Stockholm Cathedral. The choir has about 40 members (depending on which crew is needed for each work) and the activities mainly include concert activities in the Great Church, worship music, touring and radio, TV and gramophone recordings. The choir usually does a tour abroad per year and participates in about 20 concerts. The repertoire varies from early Gregorian music from contemporary to newly written music. Among the recurring works is, for example, Handel's Messiah, which the choir has performed in the Great Church more than 100 times in the last 40 years and also in other churches. The choir's leader for more than 40 years is Gustaf Sjökvist . In 2011 it was decided to close down the choir, and since January 2012 it has been run under the name Chamber Choir Musical with Ian Plaude as principal conductor. The choir's home is thus the Academy of Music .
