A Gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height consisting of a shield blazoned: Per fess Azure and Gules, in chief a giant cactus and a fleur-de-lis Or. Attached below and to the sides of the shield a Red scroll inscribed "FAIRE SANS DIRE" in Gold letters.
The shield of blue and red denotes that the unit was originally Infantry, the blue being the Infantry color and red the Artillery. The cactus symbolizes Mexican border duty and the fleur-de-lis service in France during World War I, the gold charges in chief on the blue field indicating that the service was as Infantry.
The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the 161st Field Artillery Regiment on 16 May 1928. It was redesignated for the 161st Field Artillery Battalion on 29 July 1942. It was redesignated for the 161st Armored Field Artillery Battalion on 28 April 1954. The insignia was redesignated for the 161st Artillery Regiment on 27 March 1961.
