47th Infantry Regiment

A Gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a shield blazoned: Argent, the shoulder sleeve insignia of the 4th Division, Vert; on a canton Azure an imperial Chinese five-toed dragon affronté Or scaled of the third (for the 9th Infantry).

This Regiment was organized from the 9th Infantry in 1917, the parent organization being shown by the canton taken from its arms. The regiment served in France in the 4th Division, shown by the divisional insignia on the shield.

From a wreath Argent and Vert, a water wheel Azure encircling a fleur-de-lis Or. EX VIRTUTE HONOS (Honor Comes From Virtue).

This Regiment was organized from the 9th Infantry in 1917, the parent organization being shown by the canton taken from its arms. The regiment served in France in the 4th Division, shown by the divisional insignia on the shield. The first important fight, and perhaps the most important in which it participated, was at Sergy on the Ourcq in July 1918. The characteristic feature of Sergy as approached is a water mill on the farther bank of the river. The fight at Bazoches on the Vesle in August, was probably the next most important. Both these places were formerly included in the province of Ile de France, which bore the royal arms, three gold fleurs-de-lis on a blue field. The crest is a water wheel and a fleur-de-lis for these two engagements.
