Iran War
A war between the United States and Israel against Iran and its allies, begun in February 2026 and still being fought.
American and Israeli aircraft struck Iran on 28 February 2026, killing several of its officials including the Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei. The strikes came during negotiations over Iran's nuclear programme and after the largest American military buildup in the region since the invasion of Iraq in 2003. Iran answered with missiles and drones against Israel, against American bases across the Middle East, and by closing the Strait of Hormuz.
The war spread quickly. Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Bahrain were struck and joined the fighting. Hezbollah and Israel resumed their war two days after Khamenei was killed, and Israel began occupying southern Lebanon in March.
Iran blockaded the Strait of Hormuz and claimed sovereignty over it, which caused the largest disruption of the world oil supply on record. The United States imposed its own naval blockade in April after talks failed at Islamabad.
A ceasefire held for two weeks from 8 April and broke. A memorandum signed by the two presidents on 17 June lifted both blockades. The two governments agreed again on 28 June to stop attacking each other, and that agreement collapsed on 8 July when Iran began striking merchant ships in the Strait.
