How It Began
American advisors went to South Vietnam in the 1950s as the French withdrew. After reported attacks on two destroyers in the Gulf of Tonkin in August 1964, Congress passed a resolution giving the President authority to use force without declaring war. The first Marines landed at Da Nang in March 1965. The last Americans left Saigon by helicopter on 30 April 1975.
