How It Began
North Korean forces crossed the 38th parallel on 25 June 1950. The United Nations Security Council called for its members to repel them - the Soviet delegate was boycotting and could not veto it - and American troops from occupation duty in Japan were in Korea within days. China entered in November. The fighting stopped with an armistice on 27 July 1953; no peace treaty was ever signed.
