How It Began
Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, was shot dead with his wife in Sarajevo on 28 June 1914 by a nineteen-year-old Bosnian Serb. Within six weeks the alliances of Europe had pulled every great power into the war. America stayed out for nearly three years; unrestricted German submarine warfare and the Zimmermann telegram brought it in on 6 April 1917.
