How It Began

Al-Qaeda hijackers flew airliners into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon on 11 September 2001, killing two thousand nine hundred and seventy-seven people. The Taliban government in Afghanistan refused to surrender Osama bin Laden. American and allied forces began operations on 7 October. The last American aircraft left Kabul on 30 August 2021.
