Special Agent Thomas Crowell, Special David Wieger, and Special Agent Nathan Schuldheiss were killed when their vehicle was struck by an explosive device while on assignment near Balad Air Base in Iraq.

All three special agents were conducting federal law enforcement operations in the vicinity of the base when they were killed.

Special Agent Crowell had served in law enforcement for 15 years and had previously served as a Master Sergeant with the United State Air Force where he served in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, Operation Restore Hope II, and was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, the Meritorious Service Award, and the Air Force Combat Action medal.
Survivors
He is survived by his wife and two sons.
