What Happened
Patrolman Paul Kennefick was killed in an automobile crash on Route 3 South, near Route 53, in Hanover. An oncoming vehicle entered his travel lane, causing him to swerve and slam on his brakes. A vehicle traveling behind him then rear-ended his vehicle as it attempted to avoid the oncoming vehicle too. Four occupants of the wrong-way vehicle exited their car, then re-entered and fled the scene. Patrolman Kennefick was a Vietnam War veteran who had served with the Metropolitan Police Department for eight years and was assigned to the Mounted Unit.
