General Nathan F Twining served the United States Air Force for 42 years. Nathan served in World War I, World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. Nathan was 84 years old.
What Happened
He commanded the Thirteenth Air Force in the Solomons and the Fifteenth in Italy, and survived six days adrift in a life raft in the Pacific after his aircraft went down in 1943. Chief of Staff of the Air Force, then the third Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 1957 to 1960 - the first airman to hold it.
