General John William Vessey served the United States Army for 45 years. John served in World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War and the Cold War. John was 94 years old.

What Happened
He enlisted in the Minnesota National Guard at sixteen in 1939 and took a battlefield commission at Anzio in 1944 - the last man on active duty who had fought in the Second World War when he retired. Tenth Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, 1982 to 1985.
