What Happened
Deputy Sheriff Herbert Wexler was killed in an automobile crash at the intersection of Route 2 and Teachout Road in Jerusalem Township while responding to a disturbance call. At 8:49 p.m., Deputy Wexler was traveling westbound on Route 2 and slowed down to make a U-turn on Route 2. Another car attempted to pass him but struck him from behind at high speed. Both vehicles careened off the road before coming to a stop. Deputy Wexler suffered a skull fracture. The driver of the other vehicle and a passenger in the car were transported to an area hospital with injuries. The driver was sentenced to 60 days in jail and a $200 fine for driving with a suspended license. Deputy Wexler was a U.S. Air Force veteran and had served with the Lucas County Sheriff's Department for 3 months.
