What Happened
Deputy Sheriff Herbert Williams suffered a fatal heart attack after responding to a domestic disturbance call. Deputy Williams and his partner were east of Aiken on Route 4 at 1:30 a.m., arresting a man who was disturbing the peace. The subject kicked Deputy Willimas in the chest as they attempted to subdue him. While officers put the man in the patrol vehicle, Deputy Williams had a heart attack. He was transported to the Aiken Community Hospital, where efforts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful. The subject was initially charged with murder, but the charge was reduced to aggravated assault. The man was acquitted of all charges. Deputy Williams was a United States Air Force Korean War veteran and had served with the Aiken County Sheriff's Office for 2 1/2 years.
Survivors
He was survived by his wife and two children.
