What Happened
Auxiliary Officer George Starr was struck by a car and killed while he tried to help people out of cars following a traffic crash on Route 44 (modern-day I-264), one-half mile east of South Independence Boulevard. He was on his way home when he stopped to help at the scene of a crash caused by a drunk driver. He was in uniform but was in his personal vehicle and was the only officer on the scene at the time. Shortly after he arrived, another drunk driver going above the speed limit crashed into the original vehicles, killing both Officer Starr and a civilian woman who had also stopped to help. The 19-year-old driver was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to 10 years. Officer Starr was also a U.S. Navy Petty Officer and had served with the Virginia Beach Police Department for only three months.
