What Happened
Patrolman George Bowman died six weeks after suffering a heart attack while apprehending one of two suspects who were fleeing from the police. Another officer started pursuing them after trying to arrest one of the boys for the distribution of narcotics. The pursuit had traveled from Pennsauken, through Camden, and ended on Oakland Avenue in Audubon. Patrolman Bowman collapsed after putting the juvenile driver into his patrol car following a vehicle pursuit and foot pursuit. Other officers began CPR and stabilized him enough to be transported to a local hospital. He had remained in a coma from the time he collapsed until he passed away. Patrolman Bowman was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of the Vietnam War and had served with the Pennsauken Police Department for 23 years.
