What Happened
Deputy Sheriff George Bent was struck and killed by a truck while directing traffic at a construction site on Vermont Route 2A in St. George. The driver rounded a curve and attempted to swerve to avoid hitting Deputy Bent, but his truck could not turn adequately. The truck had passed inspection despite having nine violations. Deputy Bent was a United States Navy WWII veteran who had served with the Chittenden County Sheriff's Department for six years and was also a Shelburne town constable.
Survivors
He was survived by his wife, two sons, three stepchildren, his mother, five brothers, four sisters, and six grandchildren.
