What Happened
Patrolman Floyd Montgomery was shot and killed by a subject after he and his partner were dispatched to a domestic dispute at 1424 Forest Avenue in Kansas City. Unknown to the officer, the suspect had just murdered his wife. When Patrolman Montgomery and his partner arrived, the suspect opened fire, killing Patrolman Montgomery and wounding his partner. When additional officers arrived, the suspect killed himself. Patrolman Montgomery was a United States Army Air Corps WWII veteran who joined the Kansas City Police Department in 1942 but left in 1943 to serve in World War II and returned to the department in 1945. He was survived by his wife and son. He is buried in Forest Hills Cemetery, Jackson County, Missouri.
