What Happened
Patrolman Ernest Cassidy was shot and killed while escorting a savings and loan employee carrying bank deposits at 8:50 p.m. As they approached the front of the bank at 9117 South Commercial Avenue, five armed subjects pulled up in an automobile and began firing. Officer Cassidy was unable to draw his weapon before he was struck in his chest and died at the scene. The savings and loan employee was also fatally wounded. The bandits fled with seven thousand dollars. The suspects were never apprehended. Patrolman Cassidy was a United States Army WWI veteran and had served with the Chicago Police Department for nine months.
