What Happened
Trooper Donald Strand succumbed to injuries sustained in an automobile accident 16 days earlier while reporting to the Bridgehampton Station during Hurricane Donna. He was off duty when he received word that, due to the pending storm, all leave had been canceled, and he was ordered to report to duty. He was driving to the police barracks when his vehicle was struck head-on by another car on North Sea Road in Southampton, New York. The other driver died at the scene. Trooper Strand was a United States Navy veteran and had served with the New York State Police for two years.
