What Happened
Chief Carl Simons was shot and killed while attempting to arrest a parole violator north of Leoti. After arresting and handcuffing the suspect he took him to his patrol car. The suspect was permitted to return to his car to check on his children. Although still handcuffed, he obtained a gun from the car and began struggling with Chief Simons. Chief Simons was shot and killed during the struggle. The suspect was apprehended three hours later in Colorado. The suspect was convicted of first degree murder and sentenced to life in prison on January 18, 1977.
