Turai Naftali Friedman served in the Israel Defense Forces. Naftali served with the Infantry. Naftali served in the War of Independence. Naftali was 43 years old.

What Happened

בן דרייזל ויעקב (ינקל), נולד ביום כ"ג בכסלו תרס"ה (1.12.1904) בעיר צ'רנוביץ, רומניה. בשנת 1909 עברו ההורים לגור בעיר מנהיים, גרמניה. שם סיים בית-ספר ריאלי (1924) ואף למד באוניברסיטה ובבית-הספר החקלאי הגבוה בברלין 1925)-1929). סיים את לימודיו והגיש את עבודת-הגמר שלו, אך לא הוכתר בתואר דוקטור כיוון שבינתיים עלו הנאצים לשלטון בגרמניה. בשנת 1933 היגר להולנד ועבד במעבדה עד שנת 1936, שנת עלייתו לארץ. שנים מספר עבד בעין חרוד ובמשקים פרטיים מפני שלא מצא עבודה במקצועו. משנת 1942 ועד1948 עבד במכון המטאורולוגי של ממשלת המנדט בירושלים. אך בכל חופשה שנתית נהג לעבור לאחד הקיבוצים ולהשתתף בקציר. היה קשור במיוחד למרחביה. הוא התפעל מהנוער החלוצי והלוחם, בייחוד מאז פרוץ מלחמת-העצמאות לאחר החלטת עצרת האו"ם על חלוקת הארץ לשתי מדינות, וראה עין בעין את גבורתם בהגנת ירושלים. אף הוא לא עמד מן הצד ובשורות המגינים מילא כל תפקיד שהוטל עליו. ביום הכרזת המדינה, ה' באייר תש"ח (14.5.1948), נפצע ומת מפצעיו. נקבר בסנהדריה בירושלים. ערירי היה במותו. ביום י"ב בחשוון תשי"ב (11.11.1951) הועבר למנוחת-עולמים בבית-הקברות הצבאי בהר- הרצל בירושלים.
