Samal Shlomo Mendil served in the Israel Defense Forces. Shlomo served with the Infantry. Shlomo served in the War of Independence. Shlomo was 24 years old.

What Happened

בן ריינה ודויד, נולד ביום ח' בשבט תרפ"ד (14.1.1924) בקהיר, בירת מצרים, ובשנת 1933, כאשר מלאו לו 10 שנים, עלה עם הוריו לארץ. המשפחה התיישבה בירושלים. שלמה למד בבית-ספר תיכון ומשסיים בו את לימודיו התגייס מיד לנוטרות. בתקופה הקצרה שבין שירותו כ"גפיר" ובין התגייסותו עבד כפועל. כחבר ה"הגנה" לא החסיר אף יום אחד למלא את התפקיד שהוטל עליו. היה בין מגיני ירושלים וכובשי שכונותיה העבריות. בשעת כיבוש מנזר נוטר-דם - פעולה שהיה אחראי לה - הציל את חייהן של ארבע נזירות, שנשארו באחד החדרים, בעת שנכנס תחת מטר יריות לתוך הבניין והוציאן משם. בשעת ביצוע מעשה-גבורה זה נפצע, הועבר לבית-החולים ועוד לפני החלמתו הגמורה הצליח לברוח משם, כדי להצטרף לכוחות בכיבוש עין כרם. בפעולה זו נפל, אור ליום ג' בתמוז תש"ח (10.7.1948). נקבר בשייח'-באדר א'. ביום כ"ח באלול תש"י (10.9.1950) הועבר למנוחת-עולמים בבית-הקברות הצבאי בהר- הרצל בירושלים.
