ביום 9.8.2023 התגייס לצה"ל ושירת בחיל השריון.
מתן היה מפקד טנק ומש"ק הדרכה, והצטיין בשירותו.
הוא היה חייל מסור, מקצועי, אהוב מאוד וזכה להערכה רבה ממפקדיו ומחבריו.
לצד שירותו הצבאי, מתן היה גם מוזיקאי מוכשר - כתב, הלחין ושר.
המוזיקה הייתה חלק בלתי נפרד ממנו, דרך נוספת שבה ביטא את עולמו הפנימי, רגישותו ונשמתו הגדולה.
מתן היה ילד מלא שמחת חיים, שנון ומצחיק, הוא ניחן בלב רחב ורגיש ונהג להתנדב בכל הזדמנות, תמיד היה שם כדי לעזור, לתמוך ולתת מעצמו באהבה אמיתית.
סמל מתן כהן נפל בעת מילוי תפקידו במהלך המלחמה ביום כ"ט בניסן תשפ"ה (26.4.2025). בן תשע עשרה בנופלו. הוא הובא למנוחות בבית העלמין הצבאי בפתח תקווה.
