Turai Avraham Berkman served in the Israel Defense Forces. Avraham served with the Home Front Command. Avraham served in the War of Independence. Avraham was 26 years old.

What Happened

בן סימה ואברהם-משה (נקרא על שם אביו שמת לפני היוולדו) נולד ביום כ"ה באדר תרפ"ב (25.3.1922) בוולודאבה, פולין ונתחנך חינוך דתי. אחרי שלמד בבית-ספר עממי ושנים אחדות ב"ישיבה" נרתם בעול העבודה לפרנסת המשפחה. במלחמת-העולם השנייה נמלט מפני הגרמנים, הצטרף לפרטיזנים והשתתף בפעולות נקם וחבלה באויב ואחר-כך נתקבל לצבא הרוסי הסדיר. אחרי מיגור הגרמנים עבר לאיטליה והצטרף להכשרה ב"החלוץ-פרטיזן" כדי לעלות לארץ-ישראל. בינואר 1946 העפיל ארצה באונייה "אנצו סירני". בהגיעו לארץ הצטרף לכפר עציון, נשא אישה ולזוג נולד בן. על אף חולשתו, כתוצאה מתלאותיו במלחמה, התאמץ להחזיק מעמד בעבודה והיה מטובי הפועלים בבניית מדרגות במטעי כפר עציון ובהכשרת הקרקע. גם בשמירה ובהגנה בשירותו בפיקוד העורף, במהלך חורף תש"ח התאמץ למעלה מכוחותיו לעשות את המוטל עליו. בשל חולשתו עמד לצאת להבראה, אך נשאר בכפרו בגלל ניתוק הדרך, והוסיף למלא את חובתו בהגנה. בפרוץ שריוני האויב לתוך כפר עציון ביום ד' באייר תש"ח (13.5.1948) לא יכלו לחדור למקלט אשר מתחת למנזר הגרמני, בו נמצא אברהם אותה שעה. האויב פוצץ את המנזר ומגיני המקלט נקברו תחת הריסותיו. השאיר אחריו אישה, סוניה ובן. ביום כ"ה בחשוון תש"י (17.11.1949) הועבר למנוחת-עולמים בבית-הקברות הצבאי בהר- הרצל בירושלים.
