Turai Shlomo Gitelman served in the Israel Defense Forces. Shlomo served with the Infantry. Shlomo served in the War of Independence.

What Happened

בן חוה וראובן, נולד בשנת 1923 בעיר סרני, חבל פולסיה, פולין. היה בעל השכלה עממית. בחוץ-לארץ היה חבר בתנועת-נוער ציונית והעברית היתה שגורה בפיו. בפרוץ מלחמת-העולם השנייה, עם כניסת הגרמנים לפולין, נמלט לרוסיה, וכאשר תקפו הגרמנים את רוסיה התגייס לצבא האדום והשתתף בקרבות קורסק- אוריול, נפצע בקרב וכתוצאה מכך נותר צולע. בחודש דצמבר שנת 1947 עלה ארצה באוניית-המעפילים "הפורצים" והשתקע ברמת רחל. הגיע ישר לחזית האש ולא הספיק לטעום טעם חיי שלום בקיבוץ, שהיה טריז בשטח הערבי ושלט על כביש ירושלים-בית-לחם. המצב החמיר עם הגעת כוחות מצריים לאזור והמשק היה נתון להפגזות כבדות. ב-22.5.1948 נערכה התקפה כבדה על הקיבוץ, מחלקת תגבורת שהוחשה למקום נפגעה ומגיני הקיבוץ נאלצו לסגת. בשבת, י"ג באייר תש"ח (22.5.1948), בזמן הנסיגה, נפגע מפגז שחדר לרכב בדרך בין רמת רחל לארנונה, ונפל. נקבר בשייח'-באדר א'. ביום כ"ו באלול תש"י (8.9.1950) הועבר למנוחת-עולמים בבית-הקברות ברמת-רחל.
