Specialist Four Julius Elroy Helm served the Army National Guard. Julius was 86 years old.
Biography
Born in Pierre, South Dakota, on 22 June 1940 to Martin and Mary (Permann) Helm, he grew up on the family farm outside Gettysburg, South Dakota, and went to school in Gettysburg. He was a sales representative for Lever Brothers and Pillsbury across eastern North Dakota and western Minnesota. He married Mavis Jeannette Knoll in Moorhead, Minnesota, on 11 May 1984. He lived in West Fargo for more than 50 years before moving to the Lee's Summit, Missouri, area in 2025. He loved golf, travel, cruises and camping, NDSU Bison football and Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks baseball.
What Happened
Julius Elroy Helm served the West Fargo Fire Department as a volunteer firefighter for 28 years, retiring in 2002, and sat on its Board of Directors for 18 years, more than 12 of them as president. He served in the South Dakota Army National Guard and was honorably discharged as a Specialist Four in 1965. He died on 11 September 2026, aged 86.
Survivors
Survived by his wife of 42 years, Mavis; his children Mike (Kris) Helm, Kim (Doug) Helm-Gunderson and Monte (Melissa) Helm; and his grandchildren Isabella, Greyson and Myles. Predeceased by his parents, Martin and Mary (Permann) Helm; his brother, Arlyn Helm; and his sister, Evelyn (Helm) Heffley.
