Corporal Larry Donell Harris Jr. served in the U.S. Marine Corps for 4 years and 2 months. Larry served with the Weapons Company, 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment. Larry served in the War in Afghanistan. Larry was 24 years old.
Struck an improvised explosive device while carrying a wounded Marine to the medical evacuation site.
Larry Donell Harris Jr. was born 8 August 1985. His family moved to Boulder, Colorado when he was eight, and he went through Casey Middle School and Boulder High School, class of 2003. He played defensive lineman for the Panthers and ran track. His coach said he was not the most gifted player on paper and showed up every day until he was one.
He played drums for the choir at King Baptist Church and rapped with a hip-hop group. He was often the only Black kid in the class in a white town, and he went into Reading to End Racism so younger children would hear it sooner than he had.
After September 11th he wanted the Air Force, and did ride-alongs with local law enforcement. His stepfather had been a Marine. His family moved to Thornton in his senior year and he stayed in Boulder long enough to graduate with his class. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in May 2006.
He was a mortarman, military occupational specialty 0341, with Weapons Company, 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, at Camp Pendleton. He served a tour in Iraq in 2007 and deployed to Afghanistan in 2010. Near Pendleton he pulled a civilian from a wreck on Interstate 5 and was given the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal for it.
He married Stacia in March 2010, a woman he had known eight years. He deployed a month later.
On 19 May 2016 the Weapons and Field Training Battalion dedicated Harris Trail on the Crucible at Edson Range, Camp Pendleton. Recruits run that ground learning hand and arm signals, team formations and IED awareness, and his citation is read every iteration. He is the only Marine of Operation Enduring Freedom with a Crucible obstacle in his name. More than seventeen thousand recruits a year hear what he did.
On 1 July 2010 his squad was on patrol in Garmsir District, Helmand Province, and took sporadic fire from the west. He moved his men to outflank and close with the enemy, and about forty fighters engaged the squad with heavy and accurate small-arms and machine-gun fire.
He stayed exposed, controlled his team, and suppressed the enemy with rifle and 40-millimetre grenade fire so his men could reach cover.
When the squad's machine gunner was shot in the leg, he left cover under fire, reached him, and carried him to defilade. When the decision was made to move the casualty for evacuation, he picked the wounded Marine up again and carried him toward the medical evacuation site, exposed to fire from more than one direction.
Moving through a vineyard with the Marine on his shoulders, he struck an improvised explosive device and absorbed most of the blast with his body. His wounds were fatal. The Marine he was carrying lived.
He was twenty-four. The President presented the Silver Star posthumously; his family received it at Camp Pendleton on 4 March 2011.
