Biography
Major, United States Army, Special Forces - twenty-one years in the Army, and his father called him a soldier's soldier.
He was commissioned from Officer Candidate School in 1981 and joined the Georgia Army National Guard as a rifle and mortar platoon leader. He served with the 19th Special Forces Group in Colorado as a detachment executive officer and then commander, took the Special Forces Officer Qualification Course at Fort Bragg, and served with the 20th Special Forces Group in Alabama as a detachment commander. He went through the infantry officer advanced course at Benning and the Special Forces Thai language course at Bragg.
He took an active duty appointment as a captain in April 1993 and served with the 1st Special Forces Group at Fort Lewis as battalion operations officer and detachment commander, and commanded the Special Forces instructor detachment at the Army Jungle Operations Training Battalion at Fort Sherman in Panama.
He was fond of a line of Colin Powell's: all my life I have always wanted to be a soldier. He was looking forward to commanding a Special Forces company later that year.
He cycled the many miles from his house to the Pentagon, worked out hard every day, rose early to get the most out of it, and had a voice and a manner that stood out in a crowd. He read military history, particularly the Civil War, and he and his wife visited the battlefields.
They met when he fell ill at the jungle warfare school in Panama and she was the doctor in charge of his treatment. She says that to be around him you had to be energetic.
