Biography
Lieutenant General, United States Army, Deputy Chief of Staff for Personnel - the highest-ranking officer killed that day.
He entered the Army as an enlisted soldier on the twenty-first of March 1966 and was commissioned out of Officer Candidate School in February 1967 into the Adjutant General's Corps. He took a degree in management at Golden Gate University and a master's in public administration at Ball State, and went through the Command and General Staff College and the Army War College.
He was a soldier for more than thirty-five years. He was assistant deputy chief of staff for personnel and director of military personnel management; deputy chief of staff for personnel of United States Army Europe and Seventh Army; director of enlisted personnel management at Total Army Personnel Command; J-1 of European Command; commander of the Enlisted Records and Evaluation Center; commander of the 1st Battalion Troop Brigade at Fort Benjamin Harrison; adjutant general and G-1 of the 2nd Infantry Division; and chief of staff of the 8th Personnel Command.
The Army says of him that he understood the wellbeing of the Army - soldiers, civilians, retirees, veterans and their families - to be inseparable from its readiness, and that he understood young men and women to be looking for something greater than themselves, and able to take duty to their country as the noblest thing there is.
On the sixth of October 2001 the flag at Arlington was flown at half staff from reveille until his interment was complete.
He was a soldier for thirty-five years, from March 1966 until the morning he was killed, and served in Vietnam.
