Edward Goodfellow.
Undersheriff Edward Goodfellow and Sheriff Frank McFarlane were killed in an automobile crash while transporting two prisoners on Warm Springs Road east of Thermopolis.
The officers had just arrested a father and son for stealing Army blankets. As Undersheriff Goodfellow attempted to shift into reverse, his foot slipped off the clutch, causing the vehicle to lurch forward and drive off a 100-foot cliff into a creek.
Sheriff McFarlane died instantly, and Undersheriff Goodfellow succumbed to his injuries the next day. One of the suspects was also killed.

In tribute
I served 1985 to 1993. You served too, before the badge - different uniform, same idea. You go where you are sent and you do not get to pick the call.
Undersheriff Goodfellow served with the Hot Springs County Sheriff's Office.
Thank you for your service to the Thermopolis community, and for your service before it. Gone but never to be forgotten.
Rest easy, brother.
— S. Vincent Anthony, U.S. Army 1985-1993
