Karl S. Zimmerman served in the U.S. Army.
Special Investigator Karl Zimmerman and Special Investigator Elgin McDonough were killed in a vehicle crash on U.S. 16 one-half mile east of Webberville.
Their automobile collided with the back of an unlit horse-drawn wagon while they were en route from Lansing to Macomb County as part of an ongoing investigation. Both investigators suffered fatal injuries. The farmer driving the wagon was injured.
Investigator Zimmerman was a U.S. Army veteran of WWI and had only served with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources for three days.

I served 1985 to 1993. You served too, before the badge - different uniform, same idea. You go where you are sent and you do not get to pick the call.
Special Investigator Zimmerman served with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.
Thank you for your service to the Lansing community. Thank you for your service before it. Gone but never to be forgotten.
Rest easy, brother.
— S. Vincent Anthony, U.S. Army 1985-1993
