CIA Memorial Wall

One hundred and forty stars carved into Vermont marble at Langley, beneath a single line: In honor of those members of the Central Intelligence Agency who gave their lives in the service of their country. There are no names on the wall. The Book of Honor stands open in front of it and holds the names that can be given; the rest are blank, because to protect sources and methods some must remain classified even in death.

Every star, and no name at all

140 stars, and 2 of them we can name. The wall itself names nobody. Which star belongs to whom is not public, so the arrangement here is ours - held at the wall's own measure, a star two and a quarter inches across with six inches to the next. A lit star opens.

CIA headquarters is closed to the public. There are no tours. The wall is seen by officers who work there, by families at the annual ceremony, and by the occasional escorted visitor. For almost everyone, this page is the only way to see it.
