It was the first stop of what he had called the American Comeback Tour. He was under a white marquee in a courtyard at Utah Valley University in Orem, in front of about three thousand people, doing the thing he had done for thirteen years: taking questions from anyone who queued for the microphone, including the ones who had come to argue.

He had spent the previous evening on a call preparing for the questions on Israel he expected.

He was answering one when a single rifle shot was fired from the roof of the Losee Center, about a hundred and forty yards away. He was hit in the neck. He was taken to hospital and pronounced dead there. He was thirty-one years old, and his wife and both his children were in Utah with him.

A twenty-two-year-old named Tyler Robinson surrendered thirty-three hours later, after his own father recognised him in the surveillance images that had been published.

A memorial service was held at State Farm Stadium in Glendale on the twenty-first of September. More than a hundred thousand people came and the overflow was sent to a second arena. Erika Kirk gave the eulogy.
