A crush of pilgrims on the road to the stoning, in the morning
Two streams of pilgrims met head-on at a junction of street 204 on the way to the Jamarat bridge. It was around forty-six degrees.
The crush lasted and people at the centre could not move or fall. The Saudi authorities gave a figure of seven hundred and sixty-nine; counts compiled from the reports of the countries whose citizens did not come home reached at least two thousand four hundred and thirty-one.
The dead came from more than thirty countries - Iran, Mali, Nigeria, Egypt, Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Pakistan, Cameroon, Niger, Senegal. Many families never learned where their people were buried.
The official figure was 769. Counts compiled from national reports reached at least 2,431.
