A bomb was detonated in the foyer of the arena at half past ten at night, as the audience was leaving an Ariana Grande concert. The foyer was where parents waited to collect children.

Twenty-two people were killed. The youngest was eight. Many of the dead and injured were young girls and the adults who had brought them.

Off-duty nurses and doctors in the audience went back in. Homeless men sleeping nearby ran toward the blast and pulled nails out of children.

Taxi drivers across the city switched off their meters and drove people home all night. The city's hotels opened their lobbies.

There was a vigil the following evening in Albert Square, and a woman in the crowd began reciting a poem in Mancunian dialect that the city adopted.
