Ten bombs in rucksacks went off on four commuter trains between half past seven and thirty-eight minutes past, on the line into Atocha at the height of the morning rush. Three more were found and destroyed.

A hundred and ninety-three people were killed and around two thousand hurt. They were people going to work and to school - cleaners, students, builders, many of them immigrants from Romania, Ecuador, Poland and Morocco.

Passengers from unaffected carriages and people from the neighbouring blocks were the first in. A convention centre was turned into a morgue.

Within a day the country's blood banks were turning donors away. Eleven million people went into the streets the following evening, in the rain.
