A faulty fan heater in the unmanned rear cab set light to hydraulic fluid. The train stopped six hundred metres into a steeply inclined tunnel and the doors would not open - they were hydraulic and the fluid was the fire.

Passengers broke a window with a ski pole. The tunnel acted as a chimney and the smoke went up.

Everybody who went uphill died. Twelve people went downhill past the fire, against every instinct, and all twelve lived. A hundred and fifty-five did not, most of them skiers and snowboarders on a Saturday morning, including ten children.
