The match had ended and the ground was emptying down stairway thirteen, a steep flight with wooden barriers. Somebody near the top fell.
Sixty-six people were crushed. The youngest was Nigel Pickup, aged nine. Five of the dead were schoolboys from the same town, Markinch in Fife, who had travelled together.
The stadium was rebuilt afterwards as one of the first all-seater grounds in Britain, and what was learned there was in the reports that followed Bradford and Hillsborough.
