A mooring mast at Lakehurst, in thirty-four seconds
She was coming in to the mooring mast at Lakehurst after a crossing from Frankfurt, hours late and manoeuvring in bad weather.
Fire appeared near the stern and the ship was on the ground in thirty-four seconds. Most of those aboard survived by jumping from the windows as she settled.
Thirteen of the thirty-six passengers, twenty-two of the sixty-one crew and one member of the ground party were killed. The ground man was Allen Hagaman, a civilian, who did not get out from under her.
Members of the navy ground crew ran in under the burning ship to catch and drag out people who jumped, and several were badly burned doing it.
Herbert Morrison was recording for radio and broke down mid-sentence. It ended passenger airship travel.
