The match was an FA Cup semi-final and the Leppings Lane end had been allocated to Liverpool. Access to it was through seven turnstiles for ten thousand people.

To relieve the crush outside, the police commander ordered an exit gate opened. The crowd that came through went down the tunnel directly ahead into two central pens that were already full, because nobody had closed the tunnel off.

There were fences at the front and lateral fences at the sides. People at the front were crushed against the perimeter fence and could not move or fall or get out.

The match kicked off and was stopped six minutes in. Fans tore up advertising hoardings to use as stretchers. Of forty-four ambulances at the ground, one got onto the pitch.

Ninety-seven were killed. The youngest was ten. The ninety-seventh, Andrew Devine, died in 2021 of the injuries he took that day.

The police blamed the supporters, briefed the press to that effect, and altered a hundred and sixty-four statements. It took twenty-seven years and two inquests for the dead to be found unlawfully killed and the survivors cleared of any blame.
