A suitcase bomb detonated in the forward cargo hold at thirty-one thousand feet. The aircraft came apart over the sea a hundred and ten miles off County Cork.

Of the three hundred and twenty-nine killed, two hundred and sixty-eight were Canadian citizens and eighty-six were children. It was the largest mass murder in Canadian history and for many years Canada treated it as a foreign event.

Irish fishing boats and the naval service recovered a hundred and thirty-two bodies. The people of Cork looked after the families who came, and a memorial garden stands at Ahakista looking out at the water.
