Their life

Colonel, United States Army, retired, after thirty-six years.

He was director of the enlisted personnel management directorate at the Army Reserve Personnel Command in St Louis, responsible for more than three hundred thousand enlisted soldiers of the Individual Ready Reserve. After retiring from the Army Reserve in 1996 he worked as a Department of the Army civilian in the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Personnel.

His colleagues, military and civilian, agree his sense of humour could not be matched, and that anyone could depend on him to go the extra mile. Everyone knew about the golf: on Saturdays and Sundays between six in the morning and one you could find him on the course at Fort Meade.

He and his wife Irene had married twenty-three years before, and had celebrated their daughter's wedding nine days earlier.

His wife Irene, his daughters Marcellia, Amanda, Sara, Christine, Dawn and Michelle, his stepchildren Paula and David, twelve grandchildren, his mother Marion, his brothers Leon and Christopher and his sisters Marylyn and Michelle.
