First Lieutenant, United States Marine Corps, retired, and a veteran of Vietnam, where he was wounded and lost a leg.

He came to terms with it young and went on without bitterness. Those who knew him spoke of a calm about him, a serenity, and a wry humour - and of a man who was honest to a fault and took responsibility as a matter of course.

His family say he would have been uncomfortable being written about this way; he had no time for anything that hinted at sympathy or pity.

He was fifty-four.

His wife Anne, their five children, and his parents.
