Paul F. Santoro

Firefighter Paul F. Santoro, 58, of the Fire Department City of New York - Engine 259, died on October 15, 2016, from illness related to response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. Paul joined the NYC Fire Department because of his desire to help others, along with the flexible schedule it provided to take care of his two sons, who were the pride and joy of his life. He was assigned to Engine 259 in Long Island City, where he learned the job quickly and efficiently and was always willing to go the extra mile for anyone in need. His physical strength and positive attitude could lift your spirits, especially when the chips were down. His expertise in the kitchen quickly became well known, and everyone knew there would be a delicious meal and homemade dessert if “Paulie” was working that day. Paul was truly a family man, and he took wonderful care of his two families— his firehouse family and as a loving husband and devoted father to his family at home. He loved running, skiing, and Cape Cod and was getting good at golfing before developing esophageal cancer from his time at the World Trade Center. He passed away much too early, at age 58, and is still missed so much. He is survived by his loving wife, Margaret. He was the devoted father of Anthony and Christopher and the caring brother of Maria Mawhinney.
