Detective Kevin Hanley died as a result of cancer that he developed following his assignment to the search and recovery efforts at the World Trade Center site following the 9/11 Terrorist Attacks.
Detective Hanley was a United States Navy veteran who had served with the New York City Police Department for 16 years, assigned to the 123 Precinct Detective Squad and the United States Secret Service for ten years.

Survivors include his wife, son, daughter, and six grandchildren.
